Enjoying Gudeg at Wijilan

publish on : 17 November 2011

Anyone who visits Yogyakarta will not be satisfied without having a taste of Yogyakarta genuine food, namely gudeg—thus the epithet “City of Gudeg”. The food is made of young jackfruit (called gori) with a sweet and a little savory taste which comes from thick coconut milk. Unique as it is, gudeg is always one of the most-searched things in Yogyakarta for tourists both domestic and foreign.

Gudeg is usually served with some side dishes like egg, chicken, boiled tempeh, boiled tofu, and also sambel krecek (spicy dried buffalo hide cut into small pieces). Although gudeg is sold in many places, you can always come to the center of gudeg at Kampong Wijilan, not far from Malioboro. There you can get gudeg at an affordable price.

Historically, Wijilan has always been known as the kampong of gudeg because since along time ago, from the time of Islamic Majapahit to Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Sultanate today, the Royal Family is known to be fond of this food. Even in formal events, gudeg is never left out. Moreover, Kampong Wijilan is only some meters away from Yogyakarta Royal Palace. The kampong is situated at the south of Plengkung Tarunasura (the north arched gate), better known as Plengkung Wijilan, and at the east of the Alun-Alun Utara (the North Square) of Yogyakarta.
